“Outburst” provides school holiday activities for disabled youngsters aged
from 12-18 when they move on from the Grasshoppers
group so they can enjoy a range of outings and recreational activities more suited
to their age range.
Holiday Activity Schemes weekdays during every
school holiday and half term from 10.00am to 3.30pm. We have received "Make
Space" status from 4Children, which recognises the recreational facilities
available for teenagers needing additional support. For details please contact Jamie Bragan (Horsham),
Lisa Hobbs (Crawley) or Matt York (Mid Sussex), our Leisure Development Co-ordinators, for further information.
The
Activity Schemes offer a variety of activities and opportunities for these youngsters
who suffer from a variety of conditions from severe epilepsy and cerebral palsy
to a range of physical disabilities, including deaf and blind and some who are
wheelchair users. The activities available to them include outings to
places of interest, cinema, bowling, trampolining, swimming, arts & crafts, cookery,
canoeing, horse riding, ice-skating, pottery, dance, drama and outdoor sports.
Additionally, during the Easter and Summer activity schemes, there are some
day trips arranged to places of interest for Outburst members that have included
Hever Castle, the London Eye, Arun & Wey Canal and Hurstmonceux Castle & Science
Centre. The
youngsters gain a tremendous amount from these opportunities, which their able-bodied
peers may take for granted, that they may not otherwise experience because of
their situation. They make friends of their own age, gain increased confidence
and self-esteem as well as enjoying the team spirit that "Outburst" provides.
